The Youth Empowered Leadership Group (YEL) is a committee of youth in Marin County that have the following goals:
  1. Empower youth with disabilities to become leaders.
  2. Create a community of youth with disabilities in Marin County and identify the issues affecting their lives.
  3. Collectively take action and make an unforgettable impact on Marin County, the Bay Area, and even the ENTIRE state of California.

As long as you are passionate about the disabled community, any youth are welcome to join, whether you have a disability or not.

Drake High School & Youth Empowered Leaders
Launch Disability Awareness Week

Promoting disability awareness, Sir Francis Drake High School, San Anselmo, CA launched the first Disability Awareness Week. The week exposed and immersed high school students in disability issues and culture. This student-directed project is being produced by the school’s Peer Resource program and the Mission San Rafael Rotary and Marin Center for Independent Living sponsored Youth Empowered Leadership Group. The event took place on the week of March 8-12, 2010.

During the week students participated in a variety of activities such as a wheelchair basketball game hosted by Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Programs (BORP) and a disability themed movie night.

Members of the disability rights community presented a lesson on disability history and culture to students in their social studies classes. The week culminated with an all school assembly in which guest speaker, Eli Gelardin, Executive Director of the Marin Center for Independent Living and member of Mission San Rafael Rotary, spoke about his experience growing up with a disability in the Marin County.
