International Service Projects 2010

In addition to gathering weekly donations from club members in the fight to eradicate polio around the world, the International Service Committee is involved in a variety of projects.

One example is the committee's recent donation in support of Child Medical Connection in the Boston area.  Under the guidance of Joe Bodanza ("Mr. Joe"), Child Medical Connection is a lean-and-mean non-profit that has been bringing polio-stricken children from Vietnam to receive medical treatment at the Shriner's Hospital in Boston for a couple of decades.  Although Shriner's offers free medical services (including surgeries), there are still a number of other expenses in having the children here for up to 6 months, such as travel expenses for the child and possibly a family member.  In addition, food, clothing and non-polio-related medical expenses as well as rent and cost of vehicles make up the bulk of the organization's expenses.  "Mr. Joe" does not take a salary, choosing instead to donate his modest Social Security and pension income to support the work of CMC.   Their mission dovetails perfectly with Rotary International's goal of eradicating polio from the planet and Mission San Rafael Rotary is proud to support such good work!
