Timothy Murphy School and Mission San Rafael RotaryTimothy Murphy School and Mission San Rafael Rotary

When Timothy Murphy School principal, Debbie Countouriotis, presented a long-held dream of an organic garden for the special-needs boys of her school, the Rotary Clubs of Mission San Rafael and Marin Sunrise (Corte Madera) jumped at the chance to help.

Debbie firmly believes the boys will gain confidence in their ability to work together by having a garden they plan for, budget for and care for.  The boys will grow, harvest and possibly sell the produce, thereby increasing their life skills and augmenting their science curriculum program.  Personal responsibility and accountability are key components to this project!

Mission San Rafael and Marin Sunrise Rotary Clubs, with the help of Rotary District 5150 Grants, have begun working together to make this dream a reality.  Their key partner is Cagwin and Dorward, a well-known Bay Area landscaping contractor.  Dave Phelps is the project leader for C & D and he has engaged the Marin Master Gardener's Guild to assist in the planning of this sustainable garden.

The first phase of this exciting project started on January 22, 2011 with over 50 volunteers for the two Rotary Clubs, the Redwood High School Rotary-supported Interact Club, the Marin Master Gardener's Guild and Cagwin & Dorward staff.

Volunteers rolled out 7200 sq. ft. of sheeted cardboard and laid down 3" of beautiful compost, still steaming in the early morning air.  Next steps include erecting a fence to protect the garden from four-legged invaders and building planter boxes to be filled with organic soil in preparation for the planting of a bounty of produce & plants.

The Mission San Rafael Rotary is honered to be working on this worthwhile project with so many other community members ~~~ all for the benefit of the Timothy Murphy School in helping them realize their dream!
